Yet Another Amusing Journal

Fri Oct 30, 2009, 12:19 PM
Yes - be prepared to gasp in horror, chuckle, and then roar with laughter!

This took place during high school, specifically during the swimming season.

As you may know, I was in the swim team all four years at high school. We were a large school (over three thousand students), so needless to say, the swim team was decent-sized (in my freshman year, it was nearly one hundred swimmers. By my senior, the swimmers numbered one hundred and twenty) so we had five coaches; Coach Pickford was in charge.

Now, Coach Pickford (and Coach O'Meara) always pushed us - they would force us to swim in all sorts of dreary, horrible weather you could imagine. We've swum in pouring rain (that flooded several streets), hail, and hurriance-like winds.

(I do not exaggerate. Every time those winds blew, if not for me clutching on other people with vice-like grip, I would have been blown away - in fact, my coaches forbad me from practicing my starts because they feared I would end up flying on the wind.)

Oh, and we swam several times in thunderstorms, complete with lightning. (The divers too suffered such insane coaches.)

(Every time Coach Pickford made us swim despite the lightning - not even Coach O'Meara is that crazy - the parents would later bawl out Coach Pickford for doing such a stupid and dangerous thing.)

The first time it happened, the entire swim team (minus few, such as myself because it's not exactly easy to talk to the coaches when your interpreter was freezing) raised such a racket - "There's lightning! - Are you crazy? - No way am I swimming! - We'll be killed!" - that Coach Pickford became fed up and yelled at us, effectively shutting us up with a,

"The lightning are way over there! If they get any nearer, rest assured that they would hit the divers first!"

Or perhaps LND really is sci-fi/family? "Sci-fi" could imply adventure...

BUT - your ending comment of how my story felt like a comic book hit the nail dead-center! The entire I was writing it, I kept thinking, "This would make a great comic book, this would make a great comic book..." You get the idea.

Such a pity DC likely would refuse to accept the story. XD Seriously, though... it woulda make an awesome comic book, no?

I think so! It is just so... comic-booky. It reminds me a little of the Invincible books - which is a superhero comic from Image, I think - and it has the same sorts of situations (both hilariously ridiculous and serious) and self-awareness that you have.

Also, Invincible is a great comic. I highly recommend it. :D

ALSO, congrats on posting!

Oooh, I've never heard of Invincible - I think I'll check it out when I get the chance! :D

("Self-awareness?" What exactly do you mean by that? )

:iconinvalidgriffin:
Self-awareness - and maybe that isn't even the right word? I'm not sure - in comics is like... when a character references a common cliche used in comics. Like Cyborg pointing out how many freakin' death rooms the HIVE had. A SRS BUISNESS story would've just continued on without pointing out the cliche, but your characters were partially aware of the totally unlikely stuff that was happening. And that's awesome. :D
